The World Cup, biggest sporting event in the world, has always been tremendous success. For one month every four years, all eyes are trained on a single nation. Superstars, Veterans and Legends from all corners of the planet converge on a few fields of grass to negotiate global football supremacy. Newbies fancy there chance to enter the limelight. But regardless of who emerges victorious, in the end it’s all about the World Cup goals. Do you know we have seen more number of goals with respect to goals that were scored in the last edition of World Cup, and we haven’t seen Quarters yet! Exciting no?
Surely World Cup 2014 has been a treat for fans around the world, breaking almost all records in terms of Popularity.
For me its always worthy to watch some of the greatest goals scored! Here are my favorite examples of 5 footballers who seized the moment on the international stage and didn’t let go until the ball was in the back of the net.
5. Ronaldinho’s Goal against England
Brazil were trailing after Michael Owen‘s 23-minute opening goal, but Ronaldinho turned that game around. At first, Ronaldinho assisted Rivaldo’s equalising goal just before the half-time. Then, in the 50th minute, Ronaldinho took a free-kick from 35 metres which completely surprised England’s goalkeeper David Seaman to give Brazil a 2–1 lead as he managed to score this World Cup’s most memorable goal, securing Brazil’s route to the final four.
4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic Bicycle Kick against England
The Swedish striker won the 2013 FIFA Puskás(Fans) Award for the audacious, overhead bicycle kick goal he scored from 30 yards out in a friendly against England in November 2012. The astonishing long-range goal capped a four-score performance as Ibrahimovic lifted Sweden past England 4-2 at Friends Arena in Stockholm.
3. Michael Owen – England vs. Argentina
When Michael Owen scored this miraculous goal as an 18 year-old, we all knew that a superstar was born. Michael Owen announced his arrival on the world stage by roaring first past Argentina‘s Jose Chamot, then Roberto Ayala before blasting the ball by the goalkeeper, Carlos Roa on the world grandest stage. Though England went on to lose the match, Owen’s goal proved to be one of the top moments of the tournament. Owen has since been unable to live up to his billing as England‘s savior, but that goal ensured his position at the top of England’s football legends.
2. Carlos Free Kick against France
Brazil’s Roberto Carlos kicked a shot from 115ft against France in 1997 which was seemingly heading for the corner flag but it curved like a banana to land in the net. The bend was so pronounced that the French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez made no move for the ball thinking it would go safely clear. A ball boy 30 feet away from the goal also ducked thinking it was going for him until astonishingly the ball made a last moment sweep left and landed in the back of the net.
1. Maradona’s Goal of the Century
Argentina v England, played on 22 June 1986, was a football match between Argentina and England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
It was also a match which included two of the most famous goals in football history, both scored by Diego Maradona. His first, after 51 minutes, was the Hand of God goal, in which Maradona scored a goal by using his hand. His second, after 54 minutes, saw him dribble past five England players, Beardsley, Reid, Butcher, Fenwick, Butcher (again), and finally goalkeeper Peter Shilton. In 2002 this was voted Goal of the Century by FIFA.com voters. Argentina won the game 2–1 and went on to win the 1986 World Cup with a victory over West Germany in the final. Maradona won the golden ball for player of the tournament.
